Protector Cellars is the world’s first climate positive (beyond carbon neutral) winery. Our mission is to give wine drinkers an environmentally responsible option that will help preserve the world’s winegrowing regions in the face of climate change. By examining every part of the wine production process, we are able to make choices that result in the lowest possible greenhouse gas emissions, even if these decisions break with industry norms. We then go beyond offsetting our remaining carbon footprint to have a net positive impact on the environment every time our wines are purchased. We focus on balanced, food-friendly wines from the Central Coast of California, with all of our grapes grown on certified sustainable vineyards.
Meet the Winemaker
Before starting Protector Cellars, Alex Katz made wine for over a decade with the wineries, La Fenetre, Timbre, and Mandrake, and consulted on several other Santa Barbara County wineries. During this time, he noticed that droughts were becoming more severe, grapes were ripening earlier each year, and wildfires were torching vineyard lands with increasing regularity. He felt a responsibility to address the forces of climate change that were literally changing the wine industry in front of his face so he dedicated himself to making wines that not only taste great, but have a measurable positive impact on the planet.
